Tune manuscripts are the books handwritten by musicians containing their reperoire. The earliest tune manuscript that contains the sort of dance music dealt with in this section of Folkopedia is probably that of Henry Atkinson of Morpeth, Northumberland, dated 1694.

The practice of writing out tune repertoires in this fashion declined a little after the 1880s when printed music became more readily affordable by the masses.
