This tune was published by Peter Thompson in London between 1773 and 1780. It appeared in Volume 4 of his compendium of dances and tunes - Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances
A version appears in 1882 in Bruce and Stokoe's Northumbrian Minstrelsy as the music to a song entitled Liberty For the Sailors and the tune itself has progressed in this form and with that title into the English session repertoire.
