Bert Garvin

Bert Garvin: banjo.  A retired railway worker from Flatwoods, Kentucky, close to the big Russell yards where a number of good musicians used to work.  In his youth, Burt heard a great variety of banjo players, ranging from his father's clawhammer style to a number of ‘classical banjo’ virtuosos who played with four fingers.  In high school, he became friends with the late fiddler Curley Parker who made a number of pioneer bluegrass recordings (see Rdr 0544 as well as Rdr 1017).
