''Notes on RVW2/1/35'' This is a difficult MS to transcribe. It is difficult to decypher, and to make it at all meaningful<br>
a certain amount of interpretatio is necessary. Note particularly: (a) where the transcription has substituted a rest for<br>
the crotchet at the anacrucial start; (b) the introduction by the transcribers of grace notes; and (c) the altered<br>
syllabification. (This is a notoriously contentious area of music publication in England since many music publishers insist<br>
on using prose hyphenation instead of phonetic hyphenation.)<br>

''Notes on RVW2/1/42'' This MS is defective, and the barring is profoundly incorrect. The MS contains musical inconsistencies,<br>
notational errors and spelling mistakes; much of it is barely legible. The original field notation is in pencil and the first<br>
half of this was revised and rewritten in ink, and there are clear signs of problems. The second half is almost certainly faithful<br>
to the performance of the singer, and illustrates graphically why pencil notation is inferior to audio recording. The version<br>
provided here is the best that the transcribers could make of what is either a work in progress or an unfinished effort that Ralph<br>
Vaughan Williams abandoned. The transcribers have tried to iron out the most egregious problems using the lightest of touches, but the<br>
result is neither academically trustworthy nor directly singable. However, it is provided here because it contains many interesting<br>
fragments that may assist students of variants or enthusiasts who enjoy making conjectural restorations.<br>

''Notes on RVW2/1/49'' The barlines (successive bars of 3/4 and 5/4) in the MS are erratically positioned and have been edited <br>
in this transcription to produce two bars of 4/4. The song has anacrucial phrasing throughout so a time signature of 4/4 is far easier to understand.

'''RVW2/1/84 O Mary Go And Call The Cattle Home'''
''Notes on RVW2/1/84'' This is an art song, "The Sands of Dee" with words by Charles Kinglsey (1819-75)<br>
set to music by Michael William Balfe (1808-1870). The MS is so unclear as to be more or less indecypherable.<br>
<br> | |||
Here is the poem. Note that words from verse 3, "Is it weed, or fish, or floating hair," re-cur in one of the<br>
two VWML MS images of the song.<br>
<br> | |||
_The Sands of Dee_<br> | |||
<br> | |||
"O Mary, go and call the cattle home,<br>
And call the cattle home,<br>
And call the cattle home,<br>
Across the sands o' Dee;"<br>
The western wind was wild and dank wi' foam,<br>
And all alone went she.<br>
<br> | |||
The creeping tide came up along the sand,<br>
And o'er and o'er the sand,<br>
And round and round the sand,<br>
As far as eye could see;<br>
The blinding mist came down and hid the land--<br>
And never home came she.<br>
<br> | |||
"Oh, is it weed, or fish, or floating hair--<br>
A tress o' golden hair,<br>
O' drowned maiden's hair,<br>
Above the nets at sea?<br>
Was never salmon yet that shone so fair,<br>
Among the stakes on Dee."<br>
<br> | |||
They rowed her in across the rolling foam,<br>
The cruel crawling foam,<br>
The cruel hungry foam,<br>
To her grave beside the sea:<br>
But still the boatmen hear her call the cattle home,<br>
Across the sands o' Dee.<br>

T:RVW2/1/18 [Died For Love] ?
T: Tavers? James? (no place or date)
T: Editorial note: This is an almost illegible piece at the end of RVW's collection from around Hadleigh in Suffolk.
T: It is upside down, as if the collector just seized his book to dash off a notation in a hurry.The first part of
T: the tune, however, is extremely familiar, since it is clearly the basis of the third theme in the composer's
T: "Wasps" overture. Some of the variations are conjectural interpretations.

Notes on RVW2/1/35 This is a difficult MS to transcribe. It is difficult to decypher, and to make it at all meaningful
a certain amount of interpretatio is necessary. Note particularly: (a) where the transcription has substituted a rest for
the crotchet at the anacrucial start; (b) the introduction by the transcribers of grace notes; and (c) the altered
syllabification. (This is a notoriously contentious area of music publication in England since many music publishers insist
on using prose hyphenation instead of phonetic hyphenation.)

RVW2/1/42 The Trees They Do Grow High
Notes on RVW2/1/42 This MS is defective, and the barring is profoundly incorrect. The MS contains musical inconsistencies,
notational errors and spelling mistakes; much of it is barely legible. The original field notation is in pencil and the first
half of this was revised and rewritten in ink, and there are clear signs of problems. The second half is almost certainly faithful
to the performance of the singer, and illustrates graphically why pencil notation is inferior to audio recording. The version
provided here is the best that the transcribers could make of what is either a work in progress or an unfinished effort that Ralph
Vaughan Williams abandoned. The transcribers have tried to iron out the most egregious problems using the lightest of touches, but the
result is neither academically trustworthy nor directly singable. However, it is provided here because it contains many interesting
fragments that may assist students of variants or enthusiasts who enjoy making conjectural restorations.

Notes on RVW2/1/49 The barlines (successive bars of 3/4 and 5/4) in the MS are erratically positioned and have been edited
in this transcription to produce two bars of 4/4. The song has anacrucial phrasing throughout so a time signature of 4/4 is far easier to understand.

RVW2/1/84 O Mary Go And Call The Cattle Home
Notes on RVW2/1/84 This is an art song, "The Sands of Dee" with words by Charles Kinglsey (1819-75)
set to music by Michael William Balfe (1808-1870). The MS is so unclear as to be more or less indecypherable.
Here is the poem. Note that words from verse 3, "Is it weed, or fish, or floating hair," re-cur in one of the
two VWML MS images of the song.
_The Sands of Dee_
"O Mary, go and call the cattle home,
And call the cattle home,
And call the cattle home,
Across the sands o' Dee;"
The western wind was wild and dank wi' foam,
And all alone went she.
The creeping tide came up along the sand,
And o'er and o'er the sand,
And round and round the sand,
As far as eye could see;
The blinding mist came down and hid the land--
And never home came she.
"Oh, is it weed, or fish, or floating hair--
A tress o' golden hair,
O' drowned maiden's hair,
Above the nets at sea?
Was never salmon yet that shone so fair,
Among the stakes on Dee."
They rowed her in across the rolling foam,
The cruel crawling foam,
The cruel hungry foam,
To her grave beside the sea:
But still the boatmen hear her call the cattle home,
Across the sands o' Dee.
