A few years ago, the EFDSS toured a show about traditional customs called The Everlasting Circle. It's a very good description of the process of continually marking the passage of each year. Winter and its rituals of Christmas, New Year, Wassailing and Mumming, gives way to Spring with its Easter and May Day celebrations. Summer activities give way to harvest and before we know it we're letting off fireworks while thinking about Christmas shopping.
