Beggar's Opera, The

The Beggar's Opera, ballad opera in three acts written in 1728 by John Gay (1685-1732). The lyrics of songs in the ballad opera were set to the airs of popular broadsheet ballads, opera arias, church hymns and folk tunes of the time.
