Sacred Harp
Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that took root in the Southern region of the United States. It is part of the larger tradition of Shape Note music. Sacred Harp singing came into being following the publication of Benjamin Franklin White and Elisha J. King's The Sacred Harp in 1844. It was this book, now distributed in several different versions, that came to be the shape note tradition with the largest number of participants.
