Everybody loves a hero, and some villains are secretly admired. Highwaymen and pirates are popular in song (Turpin Hero, Captain Kidd), and although we sometimes salute our military heroes as in General Wolfe, there are many fine songs about Napoleon and almost none about Wellington. (Interestingly, it's the other way round with the Navy, where songs about Nelson eclipse all others).
