Published by London Music Publisher John Simpson, The Minstrel was a series of music booklets, probably published in the late 1700s and later published as a compendium. This John Simpson is probably the son or grandson of the family and according to Kidson published between 1770 and 1795. That was at Sweeting's Alley and the address on this book is Regent Street so this is perhaps later.

The John Bowes Bowes to whom the book is dedicated is probably the wealthy friend of William Makepeace Thackeray. Bowes was known to have sponsored various publications and this may well have been one of them. (See article by Professor Peter L Shillingsburg at Mississipi State University [1] )
