He was recorded 15th January 1954 by [[Peter Kennedy]] at Chartham Hatch, near Canterbury, [[Kent]]. Born at nearby Chilham, his father was William Scamp, horse-dealer of Ramsgate, and his mother was Anne Jones of [[Sussex]].<br />

He told Peter Kennedy that he had 500 relations living in Canterbury in the horse trade. He had travelled in Ireland, Scotland, France and Wales horse dealing.<br />
