W: 1. It was the fourth of November, boys
W: In Liverpool straits we lay
W: Awaiting for fresh orders,
W: Our anchors for to weigh.
W: Bound down to the coast of Africa,
W: Our orders they did run so
W: We are bound to sink and destroy, my boys,
W: Wherever we may go.
W:
W: 2. We had not been sailing
W: Scarce sixty leagues or more
W: Before we spied a large French ship,
W: And down on us she bore.
W: She hailed us in French colours
W: To ask us from where and whence we came.
W: "We have just come down from Liverpool town
W: "And the 'Dolphin' is our name."
W:
W: 3. "Are you a Man of War, sir?
W: "Pray tell me what you be."
W: "I am no Man of War, sir,
W: "But a pirate you do see,
W: "So heave up your fore and main yards
W: "And let your ship come to.
W: "For our taygels (tackles?) are hauled
W: "And our boats all lowered
W: "Or else we will sink you."
W:
W: 4. Now our captain being an eldish (sic) man
W: On the quarterdeck did say:
W: "Let every man stand true to his gun
W: "And we will show them Liverpool play.
W: "If it had not been for my own brother
W: "This battle would never have been tried.
W: "Let every man stand true to his gun
W: "And we will give it to them a broadside."
W:
W: 5. To broadside, to broadside,
W: Which caused all hands to wonder
W: To see her French and lofty spars
W: Come rattling down asunder*
W: We shot them from our quarterdeck
W: Till they could no longer stay.
W: Our guns being smart we played a good part
W: And we showed them Liverpool play.
W:
W: 6. Now this large French ship was taken
W: To Liverpool docks and moored.
W: We fired shots at our sweethearts
W: Like fancy girls ashore.
W: We lowered down the French colours
W: And let fly the red, white and blue.
W: We drank success to the 'Dolphin'
W: And all her gallant crew.
