The Cotswolds are a range of hills in the South-West of England. The form of morris that most people will be aware of is cotswold morris. This is characterised by men(1) dressed generally in white, though often with coloured ribbons, sashes, and sometimes with coloured breeches instead of white trousers. Waving of handkerchiefs is a common characteristic, although many dances use sticks instead. The dances are generally for six, sometimes eight men, and involve precise stepping and set figures. Similar dances are performed originating from a number of towns and villages, although each generally have characteristic stepping or special figures unique to that village.

(1)There are of course many women's and mixed teams too, although some people believe morris should be for men-only.

=== Border Morris ===
The border in question is the English-Welsh border. The style of dancing from this area is characterised by men who blacken their faces as a disguise, and often wear rag jackets. The dances are generally stick dances, and the emphasis tends to be on enthusiasm and spectacle rather than the grace and precision of [[cotswold morris]].

--[[User:PhilPreen|PhilPreen]] 16:10, 3 May 2007 (BST)

There's a danger of getting into the 'Women's Morris' argument here which is probably not productive.

PP: Indeed. My first impression on seeing the list was that it appeared to have been put together by someone who believes that cotswold morris is not cotswold morris when danced by women, and therefore felt that a separate category was required. If there really is a new genre that I'm not aware of, and if the correct name for that is really "Women's Dance" then we should put it back.

Where are we to put Martha Roden's Tu'penny Dish or Rimington Ladies? It's mixed up with North West, with Border, with Cotswold, with various processionals but it's mostly taking its own line and more often than not with newly composed dances. It's not an easy one to get a handle on but we're open to opinions.

PP: Martha Roden's Tu'penny Dish are on the Federation list as border. I can't find Rimington Ladies.

PP: In my experience the vast majority of sides stay pretty much within one genre, and those that do two or more, still treat them separately. There may be some newly composed dances which draw influences from multiple traditions, but I would think these were very much in the minority.

Anyway, this page of headings was an old version and now not relevant as the dance headings have been changed now.

== How I got into folk music ==

I used to enjoy folk music and dancing at junior school, but I didn't know that what we used to do was called folk music, nor that you were allowed to enjoy these things as an adult too. So it was many years before I became properly involved in the folk scene. I first began singing with The Sealed Knot Society, and when looking for more songs to sing and tunes to play on my newly acquired tin whistle, discovered first Irish and then English folk music through records.

=== Folk Clubs ===
The first folk club I attended was The Old Pack Horse Folk Club in Loughborough. I have also regularly attended a number of other clubs in and around the Loughborough area over the years. the only one I still attend regularly now is The Grand Union Folk Club in Barrow Upon Soar. I did jointly run a folk club at the Forest Rock in Woodhouse Eaves with Dave Gooder for a while after the original organiser (Bill) emigrated to New Zealand.

=== Morris Dancing ===
The first side I joined was The Hinckley Plough Bullockers. I later joined Anstey Royale Chalfont as a musician, and then Anstey Morris Men. I now also dance with Sergeant Musgraves Dance.
I am currently bagman for Anstey Morrismen, and am also deputy squire and deputy foreman for Sergeant Musgraves Dance.
I am also webmaster for both sides.

=== Ceilidh Bands ===
The first dance band I joined was the Acme Dance Company, led by Edward Reeve. I originally played Bodhran and later a set of home made bongo type drums, produced by Edward. When Acme folded, Martin Wildig and I formed The Bang On The Wall Band. I still play mainly percussion, although my kit has evolved significantly over the years. I also play the whistle for some pieces.
